CB&I’s expertise, experience and full-range of services in the nuclear power industry help define us as an industry leader. In addition to our design, engineering, procurement and construction services, CB&I has the ability to supply piping, structural steel, modularization, containment vessels, maintenance, repairs and modifications to every power project - an advantage that other engineering and construction firms cannot match.

Today, CB&I is performing new plant design and construction services in China and the U.S., with access to two leading technologies – Westinghouse AP1000® and Toshiba Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR). 

In China, we are building four new nuclear power plants using Westinghouse's AP1000 passive Generation III+ technology, which will provide a sustainable source of critically needed power generation for the People's Republic of China.

In the U.S., we are building two twin AP1000 units at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant near Waynesboro, Ga. and at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station near Jenkinsville, S.C. These are the first new nuclear power reactors being built in the U.S. in more than 30 years. We are also building the containment vessels for both the Vogtle and V.C. Summer projects. 

Vessels. CB&I has built 130 containment vessels around the world, including 75 percent of the containment vessels for the nuclear power plants currently operating in the U.S. CB&I also has built 41 reactor pressure vessels (RPV), including 8 that were field erected. To our knowledge we are the only company to ever field erect a RPV. During this era CB&I also designed and furnished equipment hatches, personnel airlocks, spent fuel pool liners, pipe restraints, biological shield walls and reactor supports.

Repairs and modifications. CB&I is also a leader in modification work to nuclear power plants after they have been put into service. More than 10 million hours have been put in place in operating plants. Among the various scopes of work are modifications to the torus and replacement of recirculating piping on BWR plants, steam generator replacements on PWR plants, and general maintenance at several units. CB&I continues to perform modification work, most notably containment breechings for steam generator replacement projects.

Our resources include a vast global network of highly qualified project managers, engineers, welders and quality assurance managers with the specialized expertise to perform nuclear power plant work, including the paperwork, procedures, and inspections that these projects typically involve. And with locations around the world, we can quickly mobilize the people and equipment needed for any project.

For more than 60 years, CB&I has provided comprehensive services to the nuclear power industry and we have established a pioneering history that includes:

  • Engineering and designing Shippingport, the first commercial nuclear power plant in the U.S.
  • Serving as original engineer/constructor for 17 U.S. nuclear power plants
  • Developing the first U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission-approved Nuclear Quality Assurance Program
  • Designing and constructing the Y12 facility in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
  • Completing the first license application for a spent fuel dry storage facility
  • Constructing the world’s largest Hortonsphere® vessel in 1953, which was the first nuclear containment vessel
  • Providing services on the only two active restarts in the U.S.
